About Us and Our Ethical Policy

BasketBasket is a family run business based in north east Hampshire. Having lived in France, owner Virginia fell in love with baskets but could never find them in the UK. We started selling a small selection of the traditional French style market baskets in January 2007 and went on to expand the range with the launch of BasketBasket in October 2008. Our primary aim was to offer an eco-friendly alternative to the plastic shopping bag, as all the baskets are made with natural and sustainable materials.  Since then our range has expanded exponentially to include a vast array of styles and colours for all tastes and innumerable uses.

The handmade woven ranges come directly from Madagascar, Morocco and Ghana, following the principles of fair trade for all. Over the years we have established strong relationships with our suppliers, ensuring these talented artisans can continue their ancient crafts whilst being paid a fair wage. As the climate change crisis is affecting their farming needs, earning a regular income from making our products is vital to their families.

Our wish is to make our supply chain transparent and fully traceable to our customers. There are many people involved in each country - those that collect the palm or grass, those that weave, those that sew on handles and decorations, and so on - most work from their homes or villages, no factory work is involved.

Our products are all made with natural, sustainable materials which means that they will biodegrade at the end of their working life. The leather is the by-product of meat production and we are constantly expanding our vegan friendly range with no leather, or plastic.

We also strive to ensure our packaging is as environmentally friendly as possible so use recycled paper, recycled cardboard boxes and use cartridge free printers.

We have always been concerned about climate change and do our best to minimise our carbon footprint. However we know we're not perfect, so we have been members of the Woodland Trust since 2010. They do amazing work preserving and creating woods throughout the UK to help protect our environment. To find out why woods matter and how to become members too, visit: Woodland Trust.

Our baskets are appearing in a number of independent retailers, online traders, garden centres, stately homes, boutiques, interior designers and many more, throughout the UK and Europe, as well as homes around the world. A number use our small baskets as in-store shopping bags, including Neal's Yard Remedies.
