Raffia Handbags, Baskets and Giraffes from Madagascar
Raffia comes for the raffia palm tree which grows naturally in the country. The branches are cut and then used for building materials, whilst the leaves are peeled and left to dry in the sunshine. They are then cut into thin strips and washed before dyeing.
The dyes are all natural so it is very difficult to have exactly the same colour for each dye each time. The dyed raffia is then laid out on the ground to dry before the weaving can begin.
Weaving is done in the home on looms - 250g of raffia is used to create one rabane (raffia panel), about 180cm x 62cm - and takes about one day to make. The rabane panels are then used to make into bags and baskets.
The leather is cow hide, the by-product from meat production, and is made into handles which are sewn on to the baskets and handbags.
The giraffes are first sculpted with straw and then the raffia is woven around.
